Hundreds of Thai men with swords, spears, metal tubes and various sharp objects pierced through their cheeks and other body parts took to the streets to celebrate their annual vegetarian festival.

The Vegetarian Festival is a nine-day period in October that celebrates the abstinence from meat during the ninth lunar month of the Chinese calendar.

  During this period eating meat, drinking alcohol and having sex are thought to be vices and pollutants of the body and mind to be cut out entirely by the truly devoted.

It is celebrated throughout the entire country, but the festivities are at their height in Phuket, where about 35% of the population is Thai Chinese.

It attracts crowds of spectators to look at the devotees who engage in extreme acts of self-mutilation. They believe that it will help them obtain good health, peace of mind and purify their souls.

In accordance with the traditions, many religious devotees perform ritualized mutilation upon themselves and one another while under a trance-like state.

This is done without anesthetic, always inside or near the temples surrounded by other devotees with only iodine, petroleum jelly and surgical gloves as precautionary measures.

Luckily, few people ever need to have prolonged medical treatment, and although in the weeks after the festival many people will be seen covered in bandages, scarring is uncommon, stitching is rare.
 

 
Return to daily activity for the devotees occurs shortly after the completion of the ritual, frequently before the festival ends unless performed on the last days, much sooner than before the bandages themselves are removed.

Meet a man who lost his arms in an accident as a child but didn’t stop caring for his sick mother and their farm in Tongxin Village of Fengdu County, China.

Chen Xingyin, 48, was electrocuted when he was just seven years old. Since then the boy has learnt how to cook, do household chores, look after livestock and cultivate two hectares of farmland using only his feet.
And even when his ageing mother, who is now 91 years, became paralysed and confined to bed Chen refused to give up.

Now he is the only one who runs his smallholding of farmland and raises a flock of 24 sheep, two buffalos and four hens.

Surprisingly, the disabled man does not complain complain of his destiny, trying to do as many things himself as possible.

Sometimes he even finds the strength and time to help his neighbours.

Xingyin, who feeds his mother with his mouth and his nimble toes, said, “I can’t leave my mother at home alone, especially not in her old age. I may not have hands, but I have a pair of good feet.”
After a series of photographs depicting Chen spoon-feeding his mother emerged, he has become an example to follow and a hero of Chinese and international media.

See it? Facebook users claim to see Faces in flames of burning church (Photos)

Social media users, who viewed the images of a burning building on Facebook and claim to be able to see faces the fire licking the roof.

The photographs of Park Congregational Church in Llanelli, South Wales, were taken by Robert Davies as the blaze took hold on Thursday evening.
When he posted it to Facebook, the picture was met with comments claiming a spooky phenomenon.

One user, Dai Thomas, said: “Am I the only one that can see faces in this photo?”

Marc Spalding said: “I can see four faces. Two on the left, one in the middle and one on the right.”

And Jenifer Gilmore added: “Your picture has freaky faces in it. LOTS of freaky faces x.”
Robert told Wales Online that the photo had NOT been altered with image software, saying:

“It is 100 per cent not Photoshopped!“I took it on my phone and uploaded it to Facebook straight away.”

Five boys aged 15 and 16 were arrested in connection with the blaze in which no-one was injured

This calf in northern India has five mouths and is attracting a stream of human visitors

A weird calf with five mouths and ten lips was born in Narnaul, northern India.

Although the baby cow has five mouths he can only take in milk through two of his mouths. He is being fed three times a day at the dairy farm where he was born. Shocked locals have called the calf Nandi – a nickname for Lord Krishna.

From the neck down the baby, who has been called Nandi, looks like any other calf

It can also mean one who pleases others. In India’s Hindu culture, cows are revered as a symbol of life. Nandi is attracting a constant stream of visitors wanting to celebrate him. Many of them kneel before him to pray and touch his hooves.

Nandi sucks from his mother’s udders with one of his mouths. She feeds him three times a day

Local vet Sukhbir Singh said that despite Nandi’s appearance, he is healthy and thriving. But the calf’s two eyes are positioned in such a way on his distorted head that he can only see to his sides and can’t look in front of him. One eye is blue and the other black. 

Wreaths such as those around the calf’s neck are traditionally used in India during worship
