As the loyalists of President Goodluck Jonathan are pressing him to disclose on time his position on upcoming 2015 race, the head of the state has requited several eminent politicians to checkmate the seven governors railing him.
Namely, the former speaker of the House of Representatives, Alhaji Ghali Umar Na’abba, and a few former governors will be entitled to promt support for Jonathan ahead of the election year. Among the former governors are also Boni Haruna (Adamawa) and Peter Odili (Rivers), Leadership reports.
The news paper also gathered that some of the former governors met in the Asokoro District of Abuja on Tuesday firm up their plans of how to support Jonathan.
However, a source close to presidency disclosed that Jonathan is not planning an immediate cabinet reorganization.
Besides, the president has directed the national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, to bring back all leaders of the party who were either complacent before now or might have been shoved aside by internal politics in some states. The source added that the latest move by Jonathan was coming on the heels of an interim report of one of the three special committees.
“I can tell you that Mr President is not against reconciliation but he won’t trust them again; and when we had an appraisal of the situation in most of the states, especially the seven states, it was because Mr President deferred to the governors that most leaders of the party either abandoned the party or even dumped the party," the source said.
“There are several examples but if you look at Kano, for instance, the party lost Na’abba because of the governor; the situation is the same in Rivers as Odili was shoved aside by the governor. I think there is need to bring back all these persons who have been sidelined by the attitude of the governors; we can’t lose all. The leaders have to be relevant in the scheme of things in the party and national politics too,” the source added.
It will be recalled, that some elders of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secretly met on Tuesday with President Jonathan at House 7 in the State House to resolve the ongoing crisis in the party. Journalists were not allowed to get close to the venue of the meeting which lasted for about one hour.
That meeting was followed by another one. Four of the seven 'rebel' governors - four ‘rebel’ governors – Murtala Nyako (Adamawa), Babangida Aliyu (Niger), Sule Lamido (Jigawa) and Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto) - had at a closed-door meeting with Jonathan at the First Lady’s wing of the Presidential Villa late at night.
PDP split on August 31st when former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and seven state governors left the Mini Convention of the party to form the ‘New PDP’.
