The Delta State Governor,
Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan has said that performance and delivery on mandate were
the factors considered by his government in re-appointing the entire members of
the State Board of Internal Revenue for another four-year term.
He said leapfrogging the
state Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) from a paltry sum of N1.2billion
monthly to N5.7billion in January this year is not a mean feat.
Governor Uduaghan who
stated this while inaugurating the Delta State Board of Internal Revenue in
Asaba urged citizens to willingly pay their taxes, noting that it is their
civic responsibility.
The Governor while
stressing the importance of tax payment said, “It is important that we should
all pay our taxes and expect returns on the taxes through sustained tempo of
the provision of infrastructure in all the sectors of the economy”.
While admonishing citizens
not to regard tax payment as a punishment, but that the state, he said is only
enforcing the law, and tasked the re-constituted Board to explore other areas
of revenue generation, noting that the Board is a key organ in his
administration’s commitment towards achieving the programme of “Delta Beyond
Oil”.
Hon. Joel-Onowakpo Thomas,
Chairman of the re-constituted Board in his remarks thanked the Governor for
the confidence reposed in them, promising not to betray the trust.
While promising to move
all staff of the Board out of a rented apartment to their own permanent
structure, within a very short time, he equally prayed for God’s wisdom to
enable him effectively discharge his enormous duties.
Other members inaugurated
aside the Chairman are; Chief Thompson Otiti Ovwere (member) Chief Frank Nwugo
(member) and Bar. Austin None Oborogbeyi (Secretary).
