Chibok Girls: No Evidence Of FG Rescue Efforts – BBOG

The #BringBackOurGirls group yesterday expressed doubt in the rescue mission of the Chibok schoolgirls abducted over 4 months ago by Boko Haram insurgents even as they faulted the Federal Government’s indecision on the matter.

Speaking to journalists at the group’s protest in Abuja to mark the schoolgirls’ 130 days in captivity, one of the leaders of the group and former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, wondered why the government would refuse to engage in negotiation or military action in order to rescue the girls after such a long time.

Ezekwesili pointed out that it is never a sign of weakness for a government to engage in negotiation for the release of the girls rather, it would be an act of empathy and a sign of responsiveness to the plight of the families of these girls.

Her words: “This is 130 days after they were abducted and we are nowhere closer as to knowing the fate of those girls and having any information on their rescue.

“The challenge that we have is the fact that we are told that a rescue operation is going on but when you connect the dots in the statements that are made, it leaves you within the logical frame without any precise sense of a rescue operation because in the case of abduction, what we know around the world is that people try to rescue through a military operation or they try to rescue through negotiation and they try to sometimes have a mix of those two options.

“Each time that we have listened to statements from government, including from the President, it has seemed to dismiss any of these options and so that leaves us asking, what exactly is going on 130 days since these girls were abducted?.

On the report that the military knows the location of the Chibok girls, she wondered why it was taking a long of time for the girls to be brought back to their families.

“We don’t even see the evidence. About 219 girls are still in the hands of the terrorists and people have moved on as if nothing has happened. We need the girls to be rescued urgently from the den of the terrorists. We are not a weak country. We need to go in and make a statement that we are not a weak country. We want them rescued. We don’t want lies. We need the truth from government”, she said.

Ezekwesili, however, expressed optimism that the girls will be rescued, stating that “We are optimistic and no matter how others have moved on, we have refuse to move on. We will be pretending and lying to ourselves if we move on.

“We saw how Boko Haram slaughtered 51 boys. Nothing has been done about it. When we remain silent when a bad thing happens, we empower the enemies to continue. We must rise up and speak against this”, she said.

Report Army Deserters To Security Agencies – DHQ

The Nigerian military has started going after soldiers who deserted the Armed Forces.

The Director of Defence Information, Maj-Gen. Chris Olukolade, who described the act as a grave offence, said the Nigerian military would arrest those who had absconded.

Olukolade made this known while speaking on issues involving the ongoing counter-insurgency operations at Nigeria News Info.

The Defence spokesman enjoined members of the public to ensure that deserters were reported to the military authorities for prompt action.

According to him, any soldier found roaming about without being on leave or having an authorised pass, would most likely be a deserter and should be reported to the appropriate authorities.

Olukolade said, “There are deserters; there are deserters definitely and the deserters are being arrested.

“And in any case, deserters are supposed to be reported to security agencies and arrested; it is a crime to be a deserter; if you are a deserter that is the worst form of military service.

“And I think it is time the public knew some things that should not be glorified about the soldier; if a soldier is a mutineer, if a soldier is a deserter, when a soldier demonstrates cowardice, such a person is not doing anything glorious. Such a person is a disgrace and is actually operating in the realm of crime; and there is no heroism whatsoever in it.

“Now the way people are presenting this attitude makes it look as if they want to feel heroic; you desert your unit, you go about telling lies of what is happening in the front so that you would look like a gallant. Such a person should be reported and if possible arrested and presented to the authorities. If it takes 20 years, a deserter is a deserter, we will get him”.

Olukolade, who spoke on the reported attack on the former General Officer Commanding the 7th Division, Nigeria Army, Maiduguri, Maj.-Gen. Ahmed Mohammed, said the soldiers involved in the alleged mutiny.

He said that the military authorities would speak on the matter after the trial.

Olukolade said, “We have gone beyond investigation. Much as it would continue to make a case against anyone found behaving unexpectedly in that incident, a number of people, as a result of that, are definitely facing trial at the moment; we will speak on it when the trial is over and it is concluded”.

What challenges did you encounter when you started?

It was really challenging just like every business comes with its own challenges. I could remember a time I got a job for a very good role after going for the auditions from the outset. I was inside the location bus when the EP talked to the PM and the Production Manager came to tell me that the Executive Producer said that I didn’t look like Eucharia Anunobi and that they have someone who looks very much like her, and that was the person he wanted. I accepted, dropped the script, came down and went back home.

How did you feel?

I felt bad, because I really gave my best right from the audition and got the role.

Maybe the other actress has features more than you do as Anunobi?

Excuse me. The person that it was given to, how is she? She does not look an inch of Eucharia Anunobi. Please, don’t even go there because I don’t want to talk about that issue.

Are you sure it’s not because of s éx for role?

Honestly, I don’t know about that and I don’t dig into people’s lives, but for my side, there was no approach because I went for the job. The Executive Producer wasn’t there when they were doing the auditions.


What’s your notion about s éx ual harassment in the movie industry?

There is no place where you wouldn’t find s ex ual harassment, you could as well find it in the banking industry. The reason it’s so pronounced in the entertainment industry is simply that it’s for entertainment and people’s eyes are on it. So, in as much as you are a woman, men would approach you and then if you feel you want to date him and have some fun, you go ahead; it’s your life. There is no discrimination about that, but don’t make it look like you are being harassed or forced to do what you do not want to do. You have a mind of your own and you are mature enough to take decisions.

Have you experienced producers asking s éx for role with you?

No, I don’t think anybody would want to do such a thing to me. When you approach me and you are good, I might decide to take a decision and have my fun.

Are you into a relationship?

Don’t worry about my love life, I won’t like to discuss it, but when the right time comes, you would know. I’m single but not searching.

Does the lucky man in your life complain about your career?

Not at all, he loves my job.

If your husband tells you to quit acting, would you agree?

I don’t think such situation would occur, so I don’t even want to think about it. When we get to that bridge we would cross it, definitely. I think that a situation has ended a relationship for me before now but I just concluded that it wasn’t meant for me.

You look innocent, what would it cost for you to go nu de?

Please, do not judge me by my looks, I could be crazy at times. I can act any part in a movie as far as it’s not a nu de movie for my role determines what I do. As far as it’s not Nollywood, but I can go nu de in Hollywood because I believe before Hollywood would request for such, they should have their reason for doing so. For Hollywood, I can go nu de because the nakedness would go with the story and there must be something that prompted it, but here in Nigeria at a point we lost it and portray nu dity without having stories going with it.

Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa, the Senator representing Delta North Senatorial District in the Red Chambers clocked 55 on Tuesday, 8 July 2014. Senator Okowa, who is fondly called 'Ekwueme' which literally means “A man who keeps promises” is a grass-root politician, a subject in humility, a devout Christian and a dedicated family man. He is from Owa-Alero in Ika North-East Local Government Council of Delta State.

At 22, he had graduated as a medical doctor from the prestigious University of Ibadan. Since then, his unflinching commitment to issues affecting the common people knew no bound.

During his private medical practice, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa demonstrated deep affection to those in the lower rung of the society. To his credit, many primary and comprehensive health care centres were constructed, renovated and equipped to boost health care delivery in Urban and Rural communities. He also introduced the rural health scheme to address the health gaps, bringing health care to the poor and neglected.

In 2007, when he was appointed Secretary to State Government, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa brought his wealth of experience to bear. His high level of political maturity and administrative exposure enabled him to effectively assist his boss, Governor Uduaghan to efficiently coordinate the activities of the various Ministries and Agencies.

Now just 36 months in the Senate, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa has surpassed the achievements of many. Today, Senator Okowa has sponsored twelve (12) bills. The National Health Bill has been passed by the two chambers of the National Assembly. The HIV/AIDS Anti-Discrimination Bill haven been read a 3rd time in both Houses of the National Assembly, awaiting adoption of the conference committee report. The National Health Insurance Commission Bill, a bill for the Prevention and Management of Sickle Cell Disorder and a bill for the amendment of “The Privatisation and Commercialization of Public Enterprise Act” are awaiting third reading in the Senate.

So far, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa has empowered the people of Delta State. In 2012, as Senator, he held his first empowerment programme that created shock waves in the length and breath of the country. His second empowerment programme was an improvement on the first. His sheer donation of ten (10) ambulances to boost primary health care delivery in the State was remarkable, among several other empowerment items, which included 150 tricycles and cash grants to hundreds of women.

Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa is a recipient of several awards. He is a member of the Nigeria Medical Association, a Paul Harris fellow of Rotary Club International, and has been honoured by several bodies including the University of Ibadan as worthy ambassador 2011, for his contribution to the development of health care in Delta State.

As Senator Ifeanyi Okowa clocked 55 years last Tuesday 8 July, it is the yearning of his teeming supporters, that God in His Infinite Mercy grants him stable health for yet another higher responsibility. After all, it is said that when a child washes his hands clean, he dines with elders.

Ekiti PDP Dissociates Self From Pro-Jonathan TAN Rally

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ekiti State has said that it will not be part of the proposed rally in support of President Goodluck Jonathan’s re-election organized by the Transformation Ambassadors of Nigeria (TAN) in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The party in a statement in Ado Ekiti, the state capital, said the organisers of the event lacked the mandate to hold such a rally.

The statement which was issued by the state Publicity Secretary, Pastor Kola Oluwawole, said the planned rally/meeting did not have the blessing of the leadership of the party in the South-West geo-political zone.

The statement added: “Therefore, we are calling on the leaders and members of our party in Ekiti State to shun the rally slated for Saturday, August 23, 2014. We, the leaders and members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ekiti State declare that we are totally and unreservedly committed to the administration of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and his second term agenda. However, we are dissociating ourselves from the so-called proposed meeting/rally in support of President Jonathan’s second term ambition, because the planned meeting/ rally has not received the consent or blessing of leaders of the PDP in South-west”.

The Ekiti PDP alleged that the planners and their collaborators want to use the rally to score cheap political gains, wondering why such an important event would be organized without due consultation with party leaders in the zone.

“We, the members of our great party have resolved to collaborate with leaders of our party in the South-West to organise a befitting rally and to heavily mobilise the entire members of PDP in Ekiti State to the venue of the programme which will equally attract all important people in the region to pledge our support for the re-election of the president”, he said.
