Democratic Rule Stabilized Nigeria, Now We Have To Secure It - Babatope
Former Transport Minister, Chief Ebenezer Babatope, stated that the positive impact of democratic rule in governance had helped Nigeria to stabilize the polity.
He said this at the 17th Anniversary Public Lecture organized by the Bayelsa government in commemoration of the 17 years of the state’s creation.
"Nigeria is a multi-tribal and multi-religious nation. Our delicate balancing of the operations of these essential features of our socio-political lives had helped tremendously in ensuring the triumph of democracy in our nation. "Though we have conflicts, our nation has not gone under because no matter our faults, we have not allowed the basic tenets of democracy and democratic governance to be subverted in our country.
Babatope noted that the current challenge facing the country is how to make democracy work and survive. He said for him it was clear that democracy is the only form of government that can guarantee the survival of Nigeria as a nation.
"Democracy not only permits the freedom of choice and movement, it equally ensures that the fundamental rights of Nigerians are respected. "I have always been amazed when I hear people say that the military may instigate a coup simply because we have some problems in our political arrangements.''
Babatope also said that the Nigerian military had grown in professionalism and had shown the required maturity in attitude toward the political affairs of the country. However, he warned that it would never be in the interest of the Nigerian military to be used to subvert or overthrow the country's constitution:
"If Nigeria's armed forces should allow themselves to be caught in this kind of game, then, it will be a gradual descent into perfidy," he stated.
The lecture was attended by notable dignitaries from within and outside the state, including ex-Speaker of the House of Representives, Alhaji Ghali Na'Abba. Others were one-time governor of Anambra, Dr Chukwuemeka Ezeife, traditional rulers, members of the Bayelsa executive council and civil society groups, among others. (NAN)

A two-year-old boy from China has undergone an operation to give 'birth' after doctors diagnosed him as 'pregnant'.
Xiao Feng was brought to hospital after his stomach had become so distended that he had begun to suffer breathing difficulties.4
Once admitted, doctors took X-rays and Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans and discovered that Feng was carrying the undeveloped foteus of his own twin inside his stomach. The boy was then rushed to surgery.
The removed foetus measured 20 cm in width, and had a fully formed spine and limbs, including fingers and toes.
The parasitic twin would have developed into a boy, and had grown so large that almost two thirds of his affected twin's stomach was taken up.
Identical twins form when an egg splits in half after fertilization. But conjoined twins or foetus-in-foetus siblings occur when the egg fails to fully separate. Dr Jonathan Fanaroff, a neonatologist at Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital in Cleveland, said some conjoined twins can survive as 'parasites,' but not when one twin absorbs the other.

United Kingdom -- A self-taught hypnotist has been jailed for degrading a woman who he put under his trance, telling her he was her master and she was his sex slave.

Instead of using hypnotherapy to help his vulnerable victim with weight-loss and anxiety issues, ex-Royal Air Force officer Timothy Porter made the woman touch her breasts while he committed a sex act on himself.
The grandfather, who had an unblemished record in the services spanning 24 years, has now been jailed for 18 months. The 40-year-old had previously pleaded guilty to causing a person to engage in sexual activity without their consent.
Porter, who served at RAF Leeming in North Yorkshire until the end of 2012, learned hypnosis and offered to carry out hypnotherapy on the married mother, whose identity cannot be reported. After a series of sessions, Porter turned up at her home on the night of December 2 last year when her husband was away.
Despite her reservations, Porter offered to hypnotise her more deeply than before, and the pair sat on a sofa.
The woman became frightened, but the session continued. The defendant stated he was "her master, she was his sexual slave." The amateur hypnotist then persuaded her to expose and touch her breasts while he performed a sex act on himself.
She was roused from the hypnosis and went to the kitchen, the court heard, and Porter tried to restart the session, without success. Instead, his upset victim rang a friend, police were called, and he was arrested.
The prosecutor said: "His account was that he believed she was consenting to his actions during the course of this incident. He agreed the incident had escalated and he misread the situation."
The incident has had a profound effect on her sleeping pattern and her general health. She had declined Porter’s offer on previous occasions to use hypnotherapy to achieve more intense orgasms.
Porter was jailed for 18 months, placed on the sex offenders register for 10 years and banned from contacting his victim and from acting as a hypnotist for 10 years.

Former Malawi coach Tom Saintfiet cautions Nigeria over Ethiopia
Former Malawi coach Tom Saintfiet has advised Nigeria to be cautions of Ethiopia ahead of the Fifa 2014 World Cup Qualifying Play-offs.
Saintfiet warned the Super Eagles to be mindful of Ethiopia's fast counter-attacking play, spearheaded by Saladin Said.
"They have some good counter-attack strikers like Saladin Said who find it easy to score goals and so the Nigerian defence must be careful, because sometimes they are weak at the back, and so if Ethiopia can take advantage of that, then they will score goals," Saintfiet told Brila FM.
The Play-off games are the final lap of qualification for the 2014 Fifa World Cup.
Nigeria will face Ethiopia in the first-leg on October 13 in Addis Ababa, while the second leg is billed to take place on November 16 at the U. J. Esuene Stadium in Calabar.
NSCDC Arrests Notorious Cyber Criminal
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) say they have apprehended the hacker who has been on their 'most wanted' list for hacking into websites of government agencies (including security agencies), and selling fake recruitment forms to job seekers.
The suspect, identified as Adeniji Lukman, hails from Osun State. He is a 23-year-old graduate of College of Education, Ilaro, Ogun State. He confessed to having commited the cyber crimes.
The Commandant-General of NSCDC, Dr Ade Abolurin, said that among the hacked websites are these of:
- the NSCDC;
- States Security Service (SSS);
- Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB);
- National Examination Council (NECO);
- Nigeria Customs Service;
- Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), having a rip-off from the current recruitment exercise being conducted by the Service;
- Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), producing questions and answers likely to feature in the examinations, selling them to the public before the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) was held.
"He just graduated from College of Education, Ilaro, in March ,and went to computer training centre where he learnt some of these things.
"The crux of the matter is that when he hacked into our system, there were so much outcries in the country. This got to my knowledge late last year, and so we started trailing the suspect."
The suspect, Adeniji Lukman, said he chose cyber crime because of his "ignorance," as he has a talent, and knows how to design a website. Thus, he took advantage of his knowledge and defrauded many unsuspecting Nigerians.
